Christian Youth Theater-Aurora to put on 'Disney's High School Musical' Jan. 14-16

Christian Youth Theater-Aurora is putting on "Disney's High School Musical" at 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 14; 2 and 6 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 15; and 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 16, at the Batavia Fine Arts Centre, 1250 W. Wilson St.

It's the first day after winter break at East High. The Jocks, Brainiacs, Thespians, and Skaters find their cliques, recount their vacations, and look forward to the new year.

Basketball team captain and resident jock Troy discovers that the brainy Gabriella, a girl he met singing karaoke on his ski trip, has just enrolled at East High.

They cause an upheaval when they decide to audition for the school musical directed by Ms. Darbus. Although many students resent this threat posed to the "status quo," Troy and Gabriella's alliance might just help cliques dissolve, bringing new love together and uniting East High as they break free from bullying, labels, and rivalries.

This show has a timeless message that each generation has to learn anew and packages it in an effervescent, colorful joyride.

Ticket prices, which may vary by performance, are $15; $13 for age 17 or younger, or seniors, age 60 or older, as well as military or veterans with an ID. Tickets at the door are $17.

Batavia Fine Arts Centre requires masks for all patrons.

Christian Youth Theater is a 501(c)(3), nonprofit, theater arts training program for students ages 5 to 18.

Each local chapter conducts three sessions (fall, winter, and spring) teaching drama, voice, dance, and specialty theatrical workshops at weekly two-hour classes over 9 to 10 weeks. Enrolled students have the opportunity to audition and perform (or work behind-the-scenes) in a Broadway-style musical performed for the community. CYT Chicago also offers summer camps for kids ages 5 to 18, where they will spend a week learning musical theater skills, culminating in a showcase performance for family and friends.
