North Aurora brothers to perform lead roles in 'Newsies The Musical'

Two North Aurora brothers will perform lead roles in "Newsies The Musical" Thursday through Sunday, July 15-18.

With a cast of 90, the Fox Valley Park District's 51st annual Summer Stage production will be staged at Prisco Community Center, 150 W. Illinois Ave. in Aurora.

Performances will begin at 7 p.m. Thursday and Friday, 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday.

Tickets are $10 in advance and $14 at the door. Tickets are on sale at the center or online at www.foxvalleyparkdistrict.org/tickets.

Brock Demeter, 18, a 2021 West Aurora High School graduate, plays Jack Kelly, leader of an 1899 strike by orphaned and homeless newsboys in New York City. Brock will enroll at Waubonsee Community College in Sugar Grove this fall.

His brother, Nathan, 16, is a junior at West Aurora High. Nathan portrays Crutchie, best friend of Jack Kelly. The Demeters are among seven leads in the show. Nick Sargis is the director.

Set coordinator Matt Greising has built a replica wooden 1890s printing press for the production. Greising built the press, called the most iconic prop of the show, from original drawings.

The musical is based on the 1992 musical film "Newsies," inspired by the real-life newsboys strike of 1899 in New York City.
