Cancer Wellness Center's virtual run/walk a success

The Cancer Wellness Center (CWC) is happy to announce its Stepping Up to Wellness 5K Walk/Run was a success, raising more than $154,000 and still counting.

The monies raised at the virtual event will allow the center to continue to provide free counseling, education, support, and wellness programs to anyone impacted by cancer from Chicago's Northern suburbs to rural Illinois.

The Stepping Up to Wellness Virtual Run/Walk was held Sunday, April 25, with 55 teams and almost 400 participants. As the premier community building fundraiser of the year, the organization had to make a quick decision when last year's COVID shutdown occurred just weeks before the annual event that usually draws in-person crowds of more than 1,000.

"We are thrilled with the success of our second virtual event, as we were unsure of how comfortable people would be getting out and participating," says Nancy Bulzoni, executive director of the CWC.

"Much to our delight, we raised more money and are looking forward to reaching our goal of $160,000."

Donations are still being accepted at the Cancer Wellness Center website through the end of May.

As a core fundraiser, Stepping Up to Wellness raises money to support the facility and the important supportive care and education provided free to improve the emotional and physical well-being of anyone affected by cancer.

Participants of the Stepping Up to Wellness Virtual Run/Walk were able to run, walk, or hike wherever they wanted and were encouraged to take photos and videos to share on social media using #21cwcstup.

"We have great photos of participants from Chicago to the suburbs on nature trails and throughout their neighborhoods," Bulzoni said. "It was anyone's race, to complete anytime, anywhere, on their terms. Even so, while the world has been adapting to new ways, we do look forward to being back on track at Independence Grove next year."

Registration was $45 and included a T-shirt and bib. The Stepping Up to Wellness Run/Walk was made possible by the generous support and donations of its sponsors: Republic Bank (lead sponsor), Modestus Bauer, AbbVie, Wintrust Financial Corporation, AstraZeneca, Fairview Swim Club, NorthShore University HealthSystem Kellogg Cancer Center, Northwestern Medicine Lake Forest Hospital, B's Gourmet Nuts, Cancer Treatment Centers of America, and Mesirow Financial.
