The League of Women Voters (Arlington Heights-Mount Prospect-Buffalo Grove-Wheeling-Prospect Heights-Elk Grove Village) will host a combination panel discussion and networking event for local BIPOC students in high school and college to introduce them to BIPOC leaders at all level of government. "BIPOC in Leadership: Making Space for BIPOC Students to Network" will take place on Zoom on Saturday, April 17 from 10:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m.

"As local leadership and government has become more inclusive over the last few years, it's time for the next generation to rise," said Heidi Graham, president of the League of Women Voters AH-MP-BG. "We're excited to host this event and show BIPOC students all the possibilities that are open to them and connect those students with BIPOC working in and around government."

Panelists for the BIPOC in Leadership event include:

Mary Beth Canty - Village of Arlington Heights Trustee

Luis Carrizales - Chief Of Staff for State Representative Delia Ramirez

Chelsea Diaz - Advocate and Lobbyist for ACLU

Ron Holmes - Lobbyist

Matt Martin - Chicago Alderman

Lamont Robinson - State Representative

Audra Wilson - President and CEO of Shriver Center on Poverty Law

Following the panel discussion, students will be able to interact with panelists of their choice during two breakout sessions.

"Students will be able to network in a small, safe environment and ask our panelists any questions about what their careers have looked like," said Graham. "We hope that by connecting BIPOC students with BIPOC in elected office, we'll open the door to an exciting and impactful future where students can make a difference in government."
