Two Notable Celebrations For Resident of Friendship Village

It was two notable celebrations rolled into one. On Wednesday, Oct. 7, Dick Storer, a resident of Friendship Village, turned 90-years old. On the same day as his milestone birthday, Toastmasters International congratulated him for his 60th anniversary with the organization. A nonprofit, Toastmaster teaches public speaking and leadership skills through its network of clubs. Storer is a member of the District 30 club.

The celebration was a combination of an in-person window visit and a Zoom call. Storer, who lives at Willows Assisted Living at Friendship Village, hosted several guests through a large picture window in the community. At that time, he also received 50 greeting cards from fellow club members.

In addition, a Zoom call to Storer that had been coordinated by the club drew 30 virtual visitors. This included a surprise chat with Toastmaster International President, Richard Peck.

Storer is a retired electrical engineer from ComEd and a veteran of the Army Signal Corps. Much like other organizations and companies, Toastmasters has been meeting virtually during COVID-19, and Storer has remained involved.

"Dick is a flexible leader who doesn't allow technology to slow him down. He leads by example and loves to share his wisdom with Toastmasters of all ages," said Club Growth Director, Christine Crow, who facilitated the Zoom celebration. She added, "Dick has given of himself in helping many people over the years to find and develop their own story and overcome their fear of speaking in public as well as developing their leadership skills. His attitude is always the best in the room, and I'm grateful to be a part of Dick's 90th birthday celebration!"
