CLC Trustee Amanda Howland elected to Association of Community College Trustees leadership

College of Lake County (CLC) Board of Trustees vice chair, Amanda Howland, was recently elected to a three-year term as director at-large of the Association of Community College Trustees (ACCT). ACCT is the nation's largest organization of community college trustees, which represents more than 6,500 trustees at over 1,200 community colleges across the nation. Her involvement will help further develop community college board leadership in Lake County and across the country.

"Community colleges play a crucial role in maintaining an affordable education during these unprecedented times and we're honored to have Vice Chair Howland continue to champion our longstanding relationship with ACCT," said CLC Board of Trustees chair Dr. William M. Griffin. "The diversity of Lake County represents a wide spectrum of students and serves to broaden the perspectives at a national level."

Through regional caucuses held on Sept. 30 and Oct. 1 and the membership-wide ACCT senate meeting convened on Oct. 1, the membership elected Howland and eight more individuals to serve or to continue serving on the ACCT board of directors. All members were sworn into office on Oct. 2 prior to the 2020 ACCT Leadership Congress.

Howland has served as a CLC Trustee for 11 years and recently served on the ACCT Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee.

"I strongly believe community colleges will continue to become increasingly important as we continue moving to a more technology-driven world," said Howland. "We provide the gateway to an affordable education for all."

Howland is a former elementary school assistant principal and principal, in addition to junior high school teacher for students with emotional and behavioral issues. She earned her law degree from Chicago-Kent College of Law, Illinois Institute of Technology and is currently focusing on mediation, practicing in federal court. Her other educational credentials include a bachelor's degree in education from Central Michigan University and master's degrees in psychology from Michigan State University and educational administration from Northern Illinois University. Howland was elected to a six-year term on the board of trustees in April 2009 and re-elected in April 2015.
