Thumbs up, waves greet volunteers at Park Ridge voter registration event

Spirits were high at the drive-through voter registration event, hosted by the League of Women Voters of Park Ridge, on Sept. 22, National Voter Registration Day.

Volunteers from the League and Action Ridge greeted drivers in the parking lot of the Park Ridge Community Church, while other volunteers fanned out into uptown with signs that had QR codes with links to online voter registration and the mail ballot application.

Although the group registered just 14 new voters, there was still room for optimism.

"We received lots of positive comments, thumbs-up and waves," said Karen Reid, director of voter services for the League of Women Voters of Park Ridge.

Although Reid had hoped to see more high school students showing up to register, she noted that the League of Women Voters of Park Ridge had already registered 400 students at events before the pandemic hit and, in recent months, provided local high schools with a virtual Youth Voter Presentation.

Those who missed the event still have opportunities to register.

Suburban Cook County residents can go to www.cookcountyclerk.com to register to vote or request a mail ballot. Oct. 18 is the last day to register to vote online, but residents can still register in person at select locations noted on the Cook County Clerk's site or on Election Day at their polling place.
