Great Wisconsin Quilt Show Contest features work by Wheaton quilter

In 2020, quilters from 31 U.S. states and as far away as Germany, submitted their best work for judging in this year's Great Wisconsin Quilt Show quilt contest. A local resident is among those whose work will compete for a top prize.

Barbara Nagengast Lies of Wheaton and her quilt "A Garden is a Lovesome Thing," has been selected to compete in the 2020 Great Wisconsin Quilt Show.

Every quilt has a story, as Nagengast Lies describes, "Every element, including the critters, was developed from my own photos. Everything, except the fence, the trellis, the background trees and the salvia, is needle turned. The trees and salvia were created by stitching tulle over shapes. I also used tulle to shade the flowers, particularly the yellow daylilies."

Quilts accepted in the 10-category contest are judged on visual impact and stitching technique. Awards are given for Best of Show, as well as first-, second- and third-place recognition in each category. One quilt is selected by those who attend the virtual event to receive the Viewers' Choice award.

Virtual attendees can vote for their favorite quilt at QuiltShow.com/vote.

Each year, the Great Wisconsin Quilt Show also presents a unique challenge to complement the main contest. In the 2020 Botanical Quilt Challenge, quilters of all levels create quilts that incorporate a botanical theme (anything plant-related - e.g., garden, nature, floral, etc.).

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the 16th annual Great Wisconsin Quilt Show will be an online-exclusive, virtual experience Sept. 10-12 at QuiltShow.com. The event is presented by PBS Wisconsin and Nancy Zieman Productions. Proceeds from The Great Wisconsin Quilt Show support PBS Wisconsin programs and community outreach projects.

Free registration is now open for the three-day event at QuiltShow.com.

All quilt lovers are invited to learn, laugh and draw inspiration in this new online event. In addition to educational sessions, the event will offer interactive quilt exhibits and shopping opportunities from trusted vendors.
