Schaumburg police receives accreditation status

The Schaumburg Police Department was recently awarded its 10th national accreditation by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc. (CALEA) in the Law Enforcement Program for continuing to meet the highest professional standards of public safety.

The purpose of CALEA's accreditation programs is to improve the delivery of public safety services, primarily by: Maintaining a body of standards, developed by public safety practitioners, covering a wide range of up-to-date public safety initiatives; establishing and administering an accreditation process; and recognizing professional excellence.

The Schaumburg Police Department was initially accredited in 1986 and was the first in the state of Illinois to earn the distinction.

"With law enforcement conduct continuing to dominate conversations in the news, we're proud that the Schaumburg Police Department continues to maintain management excellence and the department is meeting the highest standards for professionalism in the country," said Chief Bill Wolf.

"This recognition is a testament to the quality services that our employees provide the community every day."

The accreditation process includes public safety agencies that voluntarily demonstrate how they meet professionally recognized criteria for excellence in management and service delivery. The Schaumburg Police Department underwent a multiyear assessment and meticulous site-based assessment of community engagement, policy, procedures, equipment and facilities by CALEA assessors.

Members of the department went before CALEA's 21-member board of commissioners, where the commission reviewed all findings and determined the department achieved accreditation status.

By voluntarily choosing to seek CALEA accreditation, the department commits to an ongoing review of adherence to CALEA's standards.

The Schaumburg Police Department now moves into CALEA's four-year accreditation cycle, which includes four annual remote, web-based file reviews and a site-based assessment in the fourth year.

"The positive recognition of the Schaumburg Police Department further exemplifies the village's commitment to providing high-quality, professional services to our residents," village Manager Brian Townsend said.

"I extend my congratulations to everyone in the department for the work they have achieved in meeting national standards of excellence and professionalism in law enforcement."
