Elgin's First Congregational Church launches Environmental Initiatives Sunday

On Sunday, Sept. 29, First Congregational Church of Elgin will launch two environmental initiatives.

During the 9 a.m. Discovery Time, the congregation will hear more details on a proposal to install solar energy panels on part of the church roof from representatives of Kapital Electric, a solar panel installation company.

This presentation will explain the details of the project, including the means that the church will utilize to pay for the project.

As a congregational church, the project will go to a vote on Sunday, Oct. 6 at a special congregational meeting.

After a shortened 10:15 a.m. worship service, the members of the church will go out on the congregation's annual "Jesus Has Left the Building and We Are Following Him" expedition to participate in several environmental projects.

The church will clean up yard waste dumped in the Tyler Creek neighborhood, plant a butterfly garden outside the church, have family projects for making solar ovens for use at home, and join in helping tend local native plant gardens in need of a little help.

The public is invited to join the expedition Attend the 10:15 a.m. service for commissioning, and remember to wear old clothes and bring gloves!

First Congregational Church is located at 256 E. Chicago St. in Elgin.
