Celebrate International Day of Peace Sept. 21 in Geneva

In the spirit of peace, diversity and humanity, several local faith groups have combined efforts to host this year's local International Day of Peace event: "Diverse Voices: Come Listen & Converse."

International Day of Peace is observed annually Sept. 21 across the globe.

This "Peace Day" provides an opportunity for individuals, organizations and nations to create acts of peace on a shared date.

This year's local programming has been organized by members of the Unitarian Universalist Society of Geneva, Fox Valley Jewish Neighbors in Geneva, Congregational United Church of Christ in St. Charles, and the Islamic Center of Kane County in St. Charles.

Everyone is invited to come and learn how to combine talents to better support and live together in peace in the Fox River Valley and beyond.

The afternoon will include a discussion of the Muslim experience, an environmental discussion panel, Children's Peace Activities, and a Peace Day Concert.

The programming schedule will begin at 2 p.m. with opening comments, followed by a discussion on "The Muslim Experience in the Tri-Cities" with Haroon Qureshi and other members of the Islamic Center of Kane County.

At 3:15 p.m., there will be a "Tri-City Environmental Panel" discussion with Ralph Grathoff, chairman of the St. Charles Natural Resource Commission; Jay Womack, Geneva Natural Resources Committee Chairman; and Abby Beck, 5th Ward Alderwoman from Batavia.

"Children's Peace Activities," open to children age 4 or older, also will take place during this time. These activities will include making a peace day mosaic quilt.

The afternoon will culminate with a "Diverse Music for Peace" concert, with performers from a variety of faith-based and other groups. Included will be an opening dance with Jane Siarny & Friends from InterPlay Chicago, interplay.org.; musical performances from Islamic, Jewish and Christian traditions, and a closing performance with Yolanda Lozano on crystal bowls, yolandahealinghearts.com.

This event is open to all and free from 2 to 5 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 21, at the Unitarian Universalist Society of Geneva, 110 S. Second St.

Spread the word and plan to learn more about how people from throughout the Fox River Valley can join forces to work together for peace in our community.

The celebration is free and open to all.
