Lisle student wins $3,000 National Small Business Scholarship

With tightening budgets and college students heading off to school this month, the National Association for the Self-Employed, the nation's leading advocate and resource for the self-employed and microbusiness community, announced that local Lisle, Illinois, resident Emily Woltmann has been awarded a $3,000 scholarship as part of the organization's Dependent Scholarship program.

"Small businesses, like Emily's family, all face tight budgets and bottom lines that usually don't include the rising cost of higher education for dependent children," said John Hearrell, NASE's vice president of membership and affiliate programs. "The NASE Dependent Scholarship is a recognition that America's small business community shouldn't have to decide between investing in a new piece of equipment to grow their business or paying the steep cost of their kid's tuition. We are proud of the work our small business and self-employed members are doing every day to grow our nation's economy while supporting their families by following their dreams. We congratulate Emily on this award and look forward to following her college studies."

The National Association for the Self-Employed, the nation's leading advocate and resource for the self-employed and microbusiness community, awarded Woltmann the scholarship to help defray the costs of attending DePaul University where she plans to pursue a bachelor's degree in business marketing.

The NASE Dependent Scholarship Program is an educational scholarship awarded to the dependent of NASE members to help ease the financial burden of tuition and other costs associated with attending college.

This year, four winners were chosen and each will receive $3,000 scholarships from the National Association for the Self-Employed.

"For the last 25 years, we have awarded more than $1.8 million to our members through programs such as the NASE Dependent Scholarship. Our NASE Dependent Scholarship continues to help defray the costs and ease the burden for many of our self-employed members. Rising higher education costs continue to affect the bottom lines of all Americans, and for the self-employed and microbusiness owner committed to operating a successful business, it can further strain both their family and business' budgets," Hearrell concluded.

This award-winning program is open to legal dependents of NASE members, age 16-24. To apply, students need to be high school students or college undergraduates planning to enroll in college for the upcoming fall semester. Consideration is based upon: leadership abilities; academic performance; teacher recommendations; career and educational background; school and community participation; and financial need.
