Selfless Selfie Following Blood Donation for Lake Zurich Women

Lake Zurich residents Nia Shea (left) and Kathleen Kroes capture a selfie following their blood donation this past weekend at the Chicago Blackhawks Summer Blood Drive held at Vitalant (formerly LifeSource) headquarters in Rosemont.

The two received a pair of tickets to this year's Blackhawks Training Camp Festival to be held later this fall at the United Center and were also entered into a drawing to win tickets to a regular season Blackhawks game and a jersey autographed by team captain Jonathan Toews.

Blood transfusion is the fourth most common inpatient hospital procedure in the US, and blood products can only come from volunteer donors. Yet, only three out of 100 people in the U.S. give blood.

Daily Herald readers can schedule their appointment to donate by visiting www.vitalant.org or calling (877) 258-4825. In preparation for their donation, donors are asked to eat well, stay hydrated and arrive with proper identification. The donation appointment takes about an hour (with the donation itself only around ten minutes) and is both safe and comfortable.
