Recycling and shredding event returns Aug. 10 in St. Charles

A Kane County Recycles Event will be held from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday, Aug. 10, behind the Kane County Circuit Clerk's Office at 540 S. Randall in St. Charles. Electronics and books will be accepted for recycling and documents for shredding.

Electronics like televisions, any size, type or age, computers, keyboards, laptops, printers, cables, stereos, cellphones, and microwaves can be recycled here. Christmas lights also can be recycled here.

TVs and computer monitors have a recycling fee paid directly to the nonprofit recycler. Cost is $25 for screens under 21 inches, measured diagonally across the screen, or $35 for screens 21 inches and over, payable by the resident with cash or card. All else is free to drop-off. Workers on site will unload for you!

Books of any age and condition for reuse or recycling. Also you can bring shredded paper to the book recycling area for recycling.

Documents of a confidential nature may be shredded for free on-site. Limit is approximately four boxes, because this free service is for residents only.

No documents from businesses will be accepted. No junk such as plastic, binder folders. Junk mail that is not confidential will be accepted. Staples, paper clips, and envelope windows are OK to leave in. More guidelines can be found at www.countyofkane.org/recycling/pages/confidentialDocument.aspx.

The next event will be Saturday, Sept. 14, and include electronics, books, document shredding, and paint recycling which has a cost.

Not accepted are hazardous waste or large household appliances like washers and refrigerators.

Kane County also has two electronics recycling drop-off locations that are open Monday through Friday every week. The Batavia location is at 517 E. Fabyan Pwy. and hours are 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays. The northern drop-off is at West Dundee Public Works, 900 Angle Tarn, and hours are 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays. The drop-off locations are closed on Labor Day Sept. 2, Nov. 28-29 and Dec. 25.
