Learn about 'The True Cost' of clothing with Green Night Out at the Movies March 9

Batavia's 11th annual Green Night Out at the Movies features "The True Cost," a story about clothing. It's about the clothes we wear, the people who make them, and the impact the industry is having on our world.

The price of clothing has been decreasing for decades, while the human and environmental costs have grown dramatically.

"The True Cost" is a groundbreaking documentary film that pulls back the curtain on the untold story and asks us to consider, who really pays the price for our clothing?

Filmed in countries all over the world, from the brightest runways to the darkest slums, and featuring interviews with the world's leading influencers including Stella McCartney, Livia Firth and Vandana Shiva, "The True Cost" is an unprecedented project that invites you on an eye-opening journey around the world and into the lives of the many people and places behind our clothes.

Tish Powell, municipal marketing manager with Advance Disposal, will speak before the movie about the dramatic changes that are happening in the recycling industry and the steps needed to adapt.

The featured speaker will be Mattias Wallander, CEO of USAgain. USAgain is a green for-profit company offering communities convenient textile recycling options with a mission to eliminate waste and spread awareness on reuse and recycling.

Headquartered in Chicago, USAgain operates over 12,000 collection bins in 15 states. In 2015 alone, USAgain collected 50.7 million pounds of clothing, shoes, and other textiles.

This is a free community event. Please bring your reusable cups and bowls for popcorn and lemonade.

The evening will begin with an Eco Expo at 6 p.m. Saturday, March 9, in the council chambers at the Batavia Government Center, 100 N. Island Ave.

Eco Expo exhibitors include: Advanced Disposal, Batavia Interfaith Food Pantry and Clothes Closet, Batavia Environmental Commission, Boy Scouts-Tree Fires Council, John C.
