Sign up for Winter Scavenger Hunt Feb. 17

Nature holds lots of treasures in winter, from animal tracks to snowflakes to seeds.

In this "Winter Scavenger Hunt," participants will join a naturalist-guided hike and scavenger hunt to see what they can find.

The free program will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 17, at Burnidge Forest Preserve, 38W235 Big Timber Road in Elgin.

Children must be accompanied by an adult. Advance registration is required. Call (630) 444-3190 or email programs@kaneforest.com to register.

Later in the month, learn the legends of the moon on a monthly night hike in "Snow Moon" from 6:45 to 7:45 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 20, at Camp Tomo Chi-Chi Knolls, 40W095 Freeman Road in Gilberts. The program is free.

Traditional cultures have names for each month's full moon, signifying important natural events of the season. Listen to the stories and learn a little astronomy by the light of the full moon. Participants can enjoy a night hike even if skies are cloudy. Advance registration is required.
