Learn about Vanguard Vision at Huntley High Dec. 18

Huntley High School will host an information night for parents of current eighth-graders who may be interested in the Vanguard Vision Competency-based Education program as freshmen.

The meeting will begin at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 18, in the Performing Arts Center at Huntley High School, 13719 Harmony Road.

The Vanguard Vision program strives to allow students to progress at a negotiated pace of learning as well as to offer students opportunities to choose how they will demonstrate their learning in a flexible classroom setting.

For information, contact Principal Marcus Belin at mbellin@district158.org.

To RSVP if you require childcare to attend the informational meeting, visit www.district158.org.

Huntley High School volunteers from National Honors Society will be supervising the children in two rooms based on age.

In the spring of 2017, Huntley Unit District 158 was one of 10 Illinois school districts selected to participate in the first cohort of Illinois' Competency-Based High School Graduation Requirements Pilot Program.

The program is targeted to spur innovation among school districts to develop competency-based learning systems.

Each school district chosen to participate in the pilot creates a competency-based learning and credit system of the district's design.

In competency-based learning, educators assess and advance students based on demonstrated mastery of specific skills, abilities, and knowledge, rather than on time in the classroom.

Competency-based learning allows for a potentially more relevant and personalized learning experience for students, in addition to deeper integration of technology and better utilization of teacher talent.
