Aurora Central Catholic stages modern take on family and relationships with 'Sense and Sensibility'

Aurora Central Catholic High School will stage its fall drama production, Jane Austen's 1811 novel "Sense and Sensibility," at 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Nov. 2-3, at the school, 255 N. Edgelawn Drive in Aurora.

The public is invited. A cast of 50 area residents and four student directors will be featured.

Philip A. Nohl, play director and ACC drama instructor, said "The play is about family, relationships, love and how to treat people. Our production is a modern take on the book since the themes of family and relationships and how to treat other people are relevant now."

According to Nohl, the show is a creative telling of the story with cast members, including a chorus of "gossips." They help tell the story and change scenes by rolling lead actors around on chairs during the production. Music is a sound track of popular songs played by a recorded string quartet.

Nohl said the play follows the Dashwood family as they cope with life after their father's death. Mrs. Dashwood deals with being removed from her house due to women at the time not being able to own land.

Her daughters Elinore and Marianne Dashwood, try to find suitable husbands, but each of them run into their own unique issues.

Refreshments will be available from a bake sale. Proceeds will benefit the drama program at Aurora Central Catholic High School.

Admission is $10 or $8 for seniors and students. For an additional donation, priority seating will be available.

Student directors are Reilly Mahon of Montgomery; and Emma Kearby, Sofia Nunez and Dali Torres, all of Aurora.
