Hawthorn School District 73 Welcomes New Board Member

At the October 8 board meeting, Hawthorn School District #73 appointed Vernon Hills resident Victoria Helander-Heiser as a new board of education member. She was appointed to fill the vacant position created when Jeffrey Bard resigned in August of 2018. She will serve until April 2, 2019, the date Mr. Bard's term on the board is set to expire.

"We look forward to the experience and insight that Ms. Helander-Heiser is bringing to our board," said Interim Superintendent Mark Friedman. "Her extensive work in the field of education will serve us well as we pursue our mission to inspire all students to embrace learning in an ever-changing world."

Ms. Helander-Heiser has extensive experience as a supervisor of student teachers at the university level. For the past six years, she served in this role at a number of colleges/universities throughout the Midwest. She also served as a consultant to schools and not-profit organizations through the Executive Service Corps of Chicago from 2010 to the present.

Her professional experience includes serving as Director/Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources at Northfield Township High School District #225 and as Director of Personnel and Coordinator of Public Information at Adlai E. Stevenson High School District #125 in Lincolnshire. She also served as a journalism/English teacher at a variety of Illinois and Michigan high schools. She has authored numerous articles which dealt with educational topics and school district issues for suburban/metro press and district publications.

She has completed doctoral program coursework in curriculum and human resource development at Loyola University of Chicago, and holds a master's degree in curriculum and instruction; educational leadership from National-Louis University.

Hawthorn School District #73 is a preschool through eighth-grade public school district serving more than 4,200 students. It serves all or portions of the communities of Vernon Hills, Mundelein, Libertyville, Indian Creek and unincorporated areas of Lake County, Illinois.
