SRACLC's annual Family Day and Fishing Derby a hit with campers

Submitted by the Special Recreation Association of Central Lake County

In August, the Special Recreation Association of Central Lake County hosted its 28th annual Family Day and Fishing Derby. Special needs campers and their families look forward to this event at the conclusion of camp every year. The event took place at Century Park in Vernon Hills.

The campers started out their day at the campsite in Mundelein until they were shuttled over to Century Park. SRACLC staff and volunteers grilled up some hot dogs for the attendees, and provided other food items for the hungry campers and their families.

Afterward, there were numerous games to play such as Bozo Buckets and Duck Pond, while the fishing portion of the afternoon began. Awards were handed out at the end to the participants who caught the smallest fish, biggest fish, and most fish.

They were joined by the Arlington Anglers, who helped the participants fish while also weighing the fish and bringing them back to the lake. Mitsubishi Automation Electric's VISION Committee also joined to help run the games. Rust-Oleum Cares Committee helped to prepare and distribute lunch to all in attendance. The Lake County Conservation Police also stopped by with a truck full of animal pelts to satisfy the senses.

SRACLC extended thanks to everyone who came and made the 28th Annual Family Day and Fishing Derby such a success. The participants and their families enjoyed a great day of fun.

SRACLC provides year round recreation for people with special needs and disabilities of all ages. Activities include sports and fitness, arts and crafts, drama and music, community outings and camps. For more information, visit sraclc.org or call at (847) 816-4866.
