First openly gay Orthodox rabbi to speak at joint program with Glencoe's Aitz Hayim/North Shore Congregation Israel

Rabbi Steven Greenberg, the first openly gay Orthodox rabbi, will explore how living Jewishly is affected by openly involved queer Jews on April 13-14. He will address the issue during a joint program with Glencoe's Aitz Hayim and North Shore Congregation Israel, 1185 Sheridan Road, Glencoe.

Although this issue may seem a modern challenge for Jews, it has been an issue that even the Bible recounted involving the love relationship between King David and Jonathan.

Today we are more open about the complexity of human love, and Rabbi Greenberg will examine the issues from both a practical and theological perspective. Does "queerness" in Jewish life break the law to honor the law? How does an exclusive community adapt and develop gay marriage rituals?

The weekend program begins Friday evening, April 13, with Kabbalat Shabbat services held in Perlman Sanctuary (south end of the NSCI building complex) beginning at 6:15 p.m., followed by dinner in Crown social hall and continued study with Rabbi Greenberg. Dinner reservations are required by calling (847) 835-3232.

Shabbat services on Saturday, April 14, will be held in the Tross Family Education Center beginning at 10 a.m., followed by Kiddush lunch and continued study with Rabbi Greenberg.

For information on both programs, visit www.aitzhayim.org or call (847) 835-3232.
