The DAR, founded in 1890 and headquartered in Washington, D.C., is a nonprofit, nonpolitical, volunteer women's service organization dedicated to promoting patriotism, historic preservation, and education.

Each member has done an extensive genealogy search to identify her patriot ancestor, and has been asked to join the DAR by the local chapter. The local chapter can help prospective members search for information on their family trees.

The Elias Kent Kane Chapter has several members who are involved in numerous genealogical societies to help wade through historical documents to find the specific documents for each ancestor.
