New apps bring Vernon Area Library patrons global news, cinema
Vernon Area Public Library cardholders can now access newspapers, magazines, and movies from around the world, along with indie and classic films, through two new library services: PressReader and Kanopy.
PressReader features more than 7,000 newspapers and magazines from around the globe. Users may choose from hundreds of Spanish, Russian, Chinese, French, German and English publications as well as newspapers in Polish, Korean, Hindi, Tamil, Tagalog and other world languages. Newspapers including China Daily, India's Dainik Jagran, Russia's Trud and Mexico's daily El Universal may be read on a computer or portable device using the PressReader app.
Among PressReader's 3,000 English-language periodicals are The Guardian, The Independent and The Daily Telegraph, all of the United Kingdom, and regional and national U.S. newspapers. The app also offers U.S.-based newspapers in world languages such as La Opinión (Spanish) and World Journal (Chinese).
Vernon Area Public Library cardholders have 24/7 access to PressReader, allowing them to get news from home no matter where they are in the world. A private donation made it possible for the library to offer the new service. For more information, visit http://guides.vapld.info/pressreader.
With the Kanopy app, library cardholders may stream indie, world and classic cinema on demand. The new movie-streaming platform works with any device, including Roku. Kanopy's extensive collection includes classic films - from silent-era shorts to groundbreaking features, the Criterion Collection of acclaimed classic and contemporary films, masterpieces of world cinema and arthouse from Janus Films, Sundance- and Oscar-winning films and documentaries as well as Great Courses and other instructional videos.
Users log in to Kanopy with their library card number and browse categories and featured movie collections like "before they were famous," "for foodies" and New York Times critics' picks.
