Glencoe's Aitz Hayim to Feature Insights from Jewish Scholar Steven T. Katz on the Resistance to Nazis During the Holocaust

Steven T. Katz, the distinguished head of the Eli Wiesel Center for Jewish Studies at Boston University, will return to Aitz Hayim on Yom HaShoah weekend, April 21-22, at Aitz Hayim Center for Jewish Living, 1185 Sheridan Road Glencoe. He will present his latest research about Jewish resistance and the rescue of Jews by non-Jews, and will outline the different ways people responded to the atrocities and how we have gone through a history of denial, shame, pride and understanding of the many complicated ways of resistance. In addition, he will explore the multiple ways in which different people aided Jews during this period of time.

The April 21 program begins with Kabbalat Shabbat services at 6:30pm, followed by a Shabbat dinner at 7:30pm. At 8:15pm, Professor Katz will present his program. The cost of the Shabbat dinner is $20.00 and reservations are required by April 19, 2017.

On the following day, April 22, beginning at 10:00 am, Professor Katz will tell the history of the Holocaust and how it determines how we view Jews and how we view humanity. Is the Holocaust about Jews or are Jews but one part of the victims of World War II? Were Jews outsiders or citizens of the countries in which they lived? How do we deal with those who deny the Holocaust and what freedom of speech do they have? When, if ever, are analogies to Hitler legitimate?
