Bears place Herbert on IR for at least four weeks

The Bears suffered a major blow Tuesday, losing RB Khalil Herbert for at least four weeks.

Herbert was placed on injured reserve with a hip injury, which he suffered during a fourth-quarter kickoff return Sunday against the Lions at Soldier Field.

Herbert will be eligible to return in Week 16 when the Bears host the Bills on Dec. 24.

Coach Matt Eberflus is scheduled to address the media Wednesday at 11:40 a.m.

Herbert had been enjoying a breakout campaign, amassing 643 yards on 108 carries for a 5.95-yard average that ranks just behind Dallas' Tony Pollard (6.02) for tops in the league among backs with at least 60 carries.

Meanwhile, fellow RB David Montgomery has just 434 yards on 115 carries (3.8 average).

Montgomery's workload figures to increase drastically, but it will be interesting to see if rookie RB Trestan Ebner (18 carries, 46 yards) can adequately fill in for Herbert.

Herbert also played a significant role on special teams by returning kicks and playing on punt coverage.

Other moves:

The Bears also made two moves Tuesday, claiming Giants CB Justin Layne and waiving DE Kingsley Jonathan. The 24-year-old Layne played at Michigan State and is a former third-round pick of the Steelers.
