Sox slugger Robert remains sidelined with sprained left wrist

In an attempt to get Luis Robert's nagging sprained left wrist healthy, the White Sox held the center fielder out of the starting lineup over the weekend while being swept by the Diamondbacks in a three-game series.

Along with Monday's off day, the extended rest could have put Robert back on the field Tuesday night against the Royals, but more time is needed.

"His swing is a concern, so he's not starting," manager Tony La Russa said before the game. "He's improving. When he can swing normally is when he's going to be all right. He's getting his strength back. Some of the swings he's taking are looking more normal. But you can tell he's still figuring it."

"He's doing a lot of physical work. He's ready to play defense, run the bases. The day he can swing, he's in there."

Grandal update:

On the injured list since Aug. 21 with a left knee strain, catcher Yasmani Grandal was in the clubhouse Tuesday and is likely to be back on the Sox's roster Wednesday.

"My understanding is there's a good chance he might be activated for tomorrow," manager Tony La Russa said. "Feeling good. Working, extra swings early and he'll probably swing again."

Grandal, who is hitting .203/.307/.259 with 3 home runs and 21 in 74 games, was also sidelined from June 12-July 22 with lower back spasms.

Bummer rehab:

Left-handed reliever Aaron Bummer began a rehab assignment with Class AAA Charlotte Tuesday.

Bummer has been on the injured list since June 9 with a left lat strain. In 20 games, he's 0-1 with a 3.06 ERA and 1 save.

Programming note:

Thursday afternoon's White Sox-Royals game will be exclusively broadcast nationally on YouTube. Scott Braun and Yonder Alonso will be on the call.
