White Sox lose another shortstop to injury; Andrus on radar?

Already missing one shortstop, all-star Tim Anderson, the White Sox lost another one Wednesday.

Leury Garcia, who has been splitting time at short with rookie Lenyn Sosa since Anderson went down with a sagittal band tear after checking his swing during an Aug. 6 game at Texas, is also out.

Garcia landed on the 10-day injured list with a lower back strain.

That left Sosa at shortstop, so the Sox recalled infielder Romy Gonzalez from Class AAA Charlotte.

Limited to 33 games due to three stints on the IL, the 25-year-old Gonzalez was hitting .198/.282/.339 with 4 home runs and 10 RBI with Charlotte.

"It's been a rollercoaster year for me," said Gonzalez, who started at short for the White Sox Wednesday night. "Been sick a lot, had the tonsil problem. It's great to be back with the guys. I hope I can help them compete and do what we've got to do."

Gonzalez had his tonsils removed in late June.

"I was getting sick every week," he said. "It was crazy. I didn't go five days without getting sick. I saw a bunch of specialists, they couldn't find anything. The ear, nose and throat doctor down in Charlotte was like, you're probably going to have to remove your tonsils.

"I was going to wait until the end of the year, but it just kept happening. I was like, let's knock it out right now. Lost a bunch of weight. I went back to Arizona, got my strength back, got my legs back under me. It's been a rollercoaster but it's great to be back for sure."

Gonzalez played in 10 games with the Sox last season and was 8-for-32 (.250) with 3 doubles and 2 RBI.

Andrus on radar?

With Tim Anderson expected to miss another month after having finger surgery, the White Sox are likely checking out veteran shortstop Elvis Andrus, who was released by Oakland Wednesday.

"I don't think there's a day that passes where upstairs is not looking at how to improve the club," manager Tony La Russa said. "It's safe to say they're always looking. We'll see what happens."

In 106 games with the Athletics this season, the 33-year-old Andrus hit .237/.301/.373 with 8 home runs and 30 RBI.

Robert update:

The Sox were hoping to have Luis Robert back in the starting lineup Wednesday night but the center fielder missed his fifth straight game with a sprained left wrist.

Robert didn't take batting practice Wednesday after getting a cortisone shot.

"The X-rays and everything, it looks like it's good for him to keep proceeding," manager Tony La Russa said. "There's soreness. When he swings, fighting through the soreness is not going to set him back. It's a question of when he can swing normally and not hold back. There's nothing damaged in there that you have to protect."
