Colas tabbed to represent White Sox in Futures Game

While Colson Montgomery is far and away the White Sox's No. 1 prospect this season, the 20-year-old shortstop is not going to be playing in the July 17 All-Star Futures Game.

The White Sox only have one player from their system invited to the minor-league showcase event that will be played at Dodger Stadium.

Oscar Colas, a 23-year-old outfielder from Cuba, is going to represent the Sox in Los Angeles.

The 6-foot-1, 220-pounder - a left-handed hitter - signed a $2.7 million contract with the White Sox on Jan. 25.

Teammates with Montgomery at high Class A Winston-Salem, Colas is batting .316/.374/.487 with 7 home runs and 42 RBI in 56 games.

"Oscar's been fun to watch," said Chris Getz, the Sox's assistant general manager/director of player development. "He's a physical player, he's aggressive, he's got plenty of power, he's got great hands at the plate."

Colas played first base and also pitched before joining the White Sox, but he's been Winston-Salem's starting center fielder this season.

"I think the one thing's that really stood out this year is his ability to play center field," Getz said. "Going into this season, I figured long term probably a corner outfielder. But he's shown the ability to play center field. He commands the outfield, he gets after it, covers ground and he's got a big arm.

"When you look at what he can do offensively and his defensive ability, it looks like we've got a chance to have a pretty good all-around player."

Sick bay:

After leaving Wednesday's win over the Twins with a right foot contusion, Yoan Moncada was back in the lineup Thursday night against the Tigers.

"He got bruised," manager Tony La Russa said. "We checked on him earlier, waited around for a minute, he's good to go."

Moncada usually wears a guard, but he didn't have it on when he fouled a pitch off his foot.

"He's been hit two or three times when he doesn't wear it," La Russa said. "Maybe he'll remember."

Vaughn, who hit a 2-run homer in eighth inning Wednesday to tie the game at 8 and set up the White Sox's 9-8 win in 10 over Minnesota, did not play the series opener against Detroit due to illness.
