Lynn roughed up in rehab start; next outing with White Sox?

The White Sox were hoping Lance Lynn was going to go 5 innings and throw 70-80 pitches in his rehab start for Class AAA Charlotte Wednesday night.

Lynn hit the latter target with a 77-pitch effort at Louisville, but the right-hander was pulled with the bases loaded and no outs in the fourth.

After being charged with 7 runs on 8 hits and 1 walk in 3-plus innings, Lynn's ERA stands at 9.00 after 3 Triple-A starts.

Lynn had April 5 surgery on his right knee. The obvious question is: Will his next start be with the Sox or back at Charlotte?

"I've learned it's dangerous to assume," White Sox manager Tony La Russa said Wednesday before Lynn made his start. "I'm hoping that he comes out with flying colors and they'll make an evaluation. And if his arm and his leg feel good, then he'll be here next week. If not, we'll give him another one."

Take a break:

In the early days of this season and as a rookie last year, Andrew Vaughn's biggest concern was getting enough playing time.

Now that he's establishing himself as one of the White Sox's best hitters, Vaughn is getting a regular shift and he started 13 straight games before getting Wednesday night off.

Over his last 18 games, Vaughn is hitting .329/.360/.486 with 5 doubles, 2 home runs and 10 RBI. That's a bat the Sox want to keep fresh.

"It's a day designed to back him off and just protect him," manager Tony La Russa said. "It certainly doesn't have anything to do with production. He's been running around a lot, playing the outfield, just decided this is a day he should get off his feet. Don't want to run him down at the end. It's actually true about everybody."

Waiver add:

The White Sox claimed relief pitcher Parker Markel off waivers from Oakland Wednesday and optioned him to Class AAA Charlotte.

A 31-year-old righty, Markel appeared in 3 games for the Athletics this season and pitched 3 scoreless innings despite issuing 5 walks.

In 17 games with Class AAA Las Vegas, Markel was 3-0 with a 1.89 ERA.

In addition to appearing with Oakland this year, the 6-foot-5, 240-pounder was a combined 0-1 with a 7.77 ERA in 20 games for the Pirates and Mariners in 2019.
