Sox's Vaughn likely headed to 10-day injured list with sore hand
Andrew Vaughn missed his fifth straight game Wednesday with a bruised right hand and manager Tony La Russa said it's very likely the left fielder is heading for the 10-day injured list.
The move would be retroactive, so Vaughn could be back in the White Sox's lineup next week when the Guardians and Yankees visit Guaranteed Rate Field.
"If you think about how long ago it was, it shows you that the bruise is deep and it's in an area where, it's a tough spot to handle it," Sox manager Tony La Russa said.
Vaughn was hit in the hand/wrist area by a pitch from Angels reliever Mike Mayers Friday night and is still feeling the effects.
"It's doing OK," Vaughn said. "It's kind of progressed but it's still aching when I swing, real bad. It's kind of blocking me from swinging because of the pain."
Vaughn is off to a solid start at the plate, hitting .283/.367/.566 with 4 home runs and 12 RBI in 16 games.
"I want to be out there playing," Vaughn said. "I want to be helping my team. It stinks I can't be out there."
On the other hand, X-rays showed Vaughn has a bruise and not a fracture.
"It's not a good place to get hit," he said. "A lot of people get hit there and it breaks. I got pretty lucky that it didn't break but there's still a lot of inflammation in there."
Eye on Charlotte:
Injured third baseman Yoan Moncada (oblique) played in his fourth game with Class AAA Charlotte Wednesday night and is getting close to making his season debut with the White Sox. Manager Tony La Russa was hoping to have Moncada in the lineup for this weekend's series against the Red Sox in Boston, but a Monday return seems more likely.
Johnny Cueto, who is expected to take a spot in the White Sox's rotation at some point in May, made his third start for Charlotte Wednesday and was roughed up for 4 runs on 6 hits and 1 walk in 3⅔ innings.
Burger sits:
In Tuesday's 3-1 win over the Cubs, Sox third baseman Jake Burger chased down a foul ball in the third inning and banged his left knee into the side wall,
Burger stayed in for the rest of the game, but he was not in the lineup Wednesday night.
"He came in sore," manager Tony La Russa said. "He could play but we had an alternative (Josh Harrison). He would have been restricted. Hopefully he got a lot of treatment, give it a rest and he'll be OK for this weekend. He hit it hard. Strong wall and a lot of man."
Foster flourishing:
After a solid 2020 season out of the White Sox's bullpen followed by a poor showing last year, Matt Foster's arrow is pointing up again.
The 27-year-old righty has made 10 appearances this season and has allowed only 1 run on 7 hits over 11 innings.
"Foster, you get what you earn," manager Tony La Russa said. "It started in spring training. He's really been throwing the ball very well and he's got the guts."
