Here's the latest on Bears' defensive coordinator search

While NFL teams are hiring coordinators at a rapid pace, news out of Halas Hall this week has been ... slow.

The Bears haven't yet hired a defensive coordinator to replace retired coach Chuck Pagano. News of defensive coordinator interviews, however, have trickled out of the Bears facility.

The Bears have interviewed legendary linebacker Mike Singletary, according to multiple reports. The 10-time Pro Bowl hasn't coached in the NFL since 2016.

In parts of three seasons as a head coach for the San Francisco 49ers, he amassed an 18-22 record between 2008 and his 2010 firing. After a stint coaching with Minnesota, Singletary left the league for the 2014 and 2015 seasons. He then landed a defensive assistant position with the Los Angeles Rams under former teammate Jeff Fisher in 2016. It lasted one season before Fisher was fired.

Singletary resurfaced in the coaching ranks in 2018 when he took the head coaching job at Trinity Christian Academy, a high school in the Dallas area. In two seasons Singletary was 1-21. He coached the Memphis Express of the Alliance of American Football in 2019 and went 2-6 before the league folded.

Per a report from the NFL Network, the Bears interviewed former New York Giants and Arizona Cardinals defensive coordinator James Bettcher. He served five seasons as defensive coordinator with the Arizona Cardinals from 2015 to 2017 and with the New York Giants in 2018 and 2019. He spent the 2020 season out of football.

Bettcher's Cards' defenses ranked in the top 10 in total yards in his three seasons. His move to New York was less successful, losing his job when head coach Pat Schurmer was fired after the 2019 season.

Per multiple reports, the Bears have also interviewed Indianapolis Colts defensive backs/cornerbacks coach Jonathan Gannon, who has worked in the NFL since 2007. He has been in his current role since 2018. He has helped coach one of the NFL's best defenses the past two seasons.

Additional reports have said Bears defensive line coach Jay Rodgers is leaving for a job with the Chargers under new head coach Brandon Staley. Rodgers and Staley worked together when Staley was the Bears' outside linebackers coach in 2017 and 2018.

According to the NFL Network, the Atlanta Falcons are hiring Bears passing game coordinator Dave Ragone as offensive coordinator. Ragone has worked for the Bears since 2016. Joining him will be Bears running backs coach Charles London, who will be quarterbacks coach.
