Cubs may finallly get to see pitcher they acquired Aug. 31
The Cubs may finally get a look at their mystery pitcher soon.
They acquired lefthander Andrew Chafin in a trade from Arizona on Aug. 31. He was on the injured list at the time with a finger issue, but has been working his way back since joining the Cubs, including a simulated game Wednesday.
"Threw really well, right around 20 pitches, 23 pitches," Cubs manager David Ross said. "Looked great, faced hitters. I thought looked really sharp. I've got to talk with the front office. We've got a couple things in the mix. We'll make sure everything's good tomorrow and kind of access from there."
Ross said the Cubs are also looking at getting veteran lefty Jose Quintana back from left lat inflammation. Chafin, 30, spent seven seasons with the Diamondbacks. He wasn't sharp this year, but his career ERA is 3.68 and he has 288 strikeouts in 271 innings.
Asked if it's conceivable Chafin is available against Minnesota this weekend, Ross answered, "Yes, that is conceivable."
