White Sox acquire outfielder Dyson from Pittsburgh

The White Sox added outfield depth and speed by trading for Jarrod Dyson from Pittsburgh in exchange for international signing bonus pool money on Friday.

The White Sox designated outfielder Nicky Delmonico for assignment and optioned outfielder Luis González to the team's Schaumburg training facility.

The MLB trade deadline is Monday.

Dyson, 36, hit just .157 (8-for-51) with 4 stolen bases in 20 games (15 starts) for the Pirates, who signed him as a free agent in February. Dyson, who bats left-handed, is just a career .245 hitter with 21 home runs, but he has 254 stolen bases in an 11-year career while playing for four teams. His career 85.2% stolen-base success rate leads all active players. He swiped a career-best 36 bases with the Royals in 2014.

Dyson has been a center field throughout his career. But with rookie Luis Robert entrenched at that position, Dyson could be used as a late-inning defensive replacement for Eloy Jimenez in left field.

Dyson will wear No. 32.

The Sox reinstated second baseman Nick Madrigal from the 10-day injured list before Friday night's series opener against Kansas City.

Madrigal, the fourth overall pick in the 2018 draft out of Oregon State, was off to a 5-for-17 start at the plate before injuring his left shoulder in just his fifth big-league game.

Danny Mendick filled in creditably in Madrigal's place, as he took a slash line of .266/.314/.443 into Friday's game. His 21 hits included 3 homers.

"I've always known what Danny can do on the field," Madrigal said of the 22nd-round pick in 2015. "We were fortunate enough in the off-season to work out together a lot of times. We hit and took groundballs every single day, pretty much just me and him at the (spring training) complex (in Arizona). It is cool to see him doing as well as he is because he does deserve it."
