A volleyball on the track upstairs at Carmel?

Visiting Marian Catholic showed everyone in the gym on Tuesday that it meant business.

It was like a prize fight. After Carmel (17-3) took care of business in set one 25-18, the visitors took set two 25-22.

Carmel claimed the match in thrilling fashion, 26-24, and in the process, found an impressive middle blocker named Tayah Farris.

"I've been on varsity since my sophomore year,'' Farris said. '"But I really worked hard coming into this season."

Farris notched 6 kills in the win on Tuesday, including one that ended up on the upper deck track of Carmel's gym.

"You can see her by the speed in her game,'' said Carmel coach, Dave Pazely. "At the end of last year, she had a foot injury. Now, that's she is 100 percent, she works with an unorthodox swing."

Farris and teammate Annie Bart feel they can take this team to the state tournament this fall.

Bart had 11 kills in Tuesday's win.

"I've never seen a ball in the upper deck,'' Bart said of Farris.

Both these girls spoke highly of the Corsairs' libero, Milana Moisio. She had 21 digs in the three sets.

"She's a great teammate,'' Bart added. "And she's all over the place."

Pazely tossed out a compliment to the Corsairs' sophomore defensive whiz.

"She's a Division-I talent,'' he said.

The third set was tied early and on a Riley Clark kill, the Corsairs took a lead. Maya Mainzer put one down and the Carmel lead was 10-8. Mainzer was also an effective server on this night.

Mainzer was at the line to start the match. She worked with 2 kills from Bart and a block kill from Farris. It was 7-4 Corsairs.

The first set ended with kills from Eileen Tarcha and the lefty Clark.

The second set went to the visitors. It got close at the end. With Tarcha serving, Bart put one down. Moisio flipped one down and that was as close as it got.
