Boys volleyball: Vernon Hills rallies to beat Mundelein
Sophomore middle hitter Josh Ludolph pounded 8 kills on 12-of-12 hitting, and Vernon Hills celebrated senior night by rallying to beat visiting Mundelein 23-25, 26-24, 25-17 in nonconference boys volleyball action Monday.
Vernon Hills senior Sammy Adkisson played three different positions - libero, setter and hitter - and contributed 1 ace on 20-of-20 serving, 9 assists on 28-of-28 setting and 17 digs. Senior outside hitter Greg Tow had 7 kills (19-of-22 hitting) and 6 digs. Vernon Hills (10-6) also got contributions from senior setter Noah Proft (19 assists, 8 digs, 4 kills), senior middle hitter Joey Reyes (7 kills, 1 ace, 3 blocks) and senior libero Ryan Pristas (10 digs, 2 aces).
"It was an interesting senior night," Cougars coach Chris Curry said. "We started out strong with our all-senior lineup, but got oddly tentative at the end of the first set, and it carried over early in the second. So it was encouraging to see them get their composure back, cut down the errors, and make a comeback from down 10-20.
"Our middle attack was the difference late, and we finally found some success serving."
Mundelein (8-14) was led by Marc Rey's 8 kills and 4 blocks and Andrew Gibbons' 7 kills and 3 blocks. Eric Morales and Ricky Osornio (3 blocks) each had 3 kills.
