Baseball: York, WW South can't break tie

Ending in a tie after more than two hours of baseball is not ideal.

But in early April, you'll take it.

Wheaton Warrenville South and visiting York played eight innings on Friday, only to end in a 3-3 tie when the game was called due to darkness. Because it's a nonconference matchup, it won't be completed.

"It was a disappointing ending, but it was a fun game overall," said York catcher Bo Thomas. "We got the momentum in the fourth or fifth inning and just went from there. We started to pick it up at the end. We'll get there."

With York (2-4-1) leading 3-2 after five innings, WW South starting pitcher Brad Novak tied it with an RBI double in the top of the sixth. Not only did Novak drive in 2 runs, he also struck out six in 5 innings.

"I think our team played well, we just ran out of time," Novak said. "(A tie) is not the best thing. Some things didn't go our way, but I think we kept our heads up and did a decent job."

Phil Oddo staked the Tigers (5-2-1) to a 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning with an RBI double. Novak singled in a fourth-inning run to make it 2-0.

York scored all its runs in the fifth. After Joe Goehl's groundout narrowed the gap to 2-1, Thomas laced a 2-run line-drive single to left field to put the Dukes ahead 3-2.

York starting pitcher Kellen Gilmartin allowed 3 hits in 4 innings.
