Lake Zurich's Trebac, Carmel take Lake County honors

Lake Zurich senior Carly Trebac has gained a lot of confidence in herself and in her girls gymnastics teammates.

Trebac joined the team this year while the Bears as a program is back in their second year of competition after a long hiatus.

Trebac was the all-around champion at the Lake County Invite, while Carmel Catholic was the top team in the 11-team field at Mundelein High School on Saturday.

"I had a really good day," Trebac said. "I was feeding off the energy of the team, because they are very supportive. They are always telling me to be confident. I'm starting to realize what kind of gymnast I am and that I should be confident in my gymnastics. I've seen better meets and have been improving."

Trebac reached her highest all-around score of 37 which chalked up the top score and put her in an elite group. She also placed first on the balance beam 9.55, tied for second place tie with Mundelein's Emma Hallin on vault (9.5) and was third on the floor exercise (9.25).

"I think I have been getting more consistent over the whole season as my scores are improving," Trebac added. "But, I've seen improvement on the beam on bars."

Carmel continues its run toward the state series and has consistently been in the 146 range. The Corsairs posted a 146.5 Saturday.

Barrington was right third (141.55) followed by Stevenson (141.05) and Lake Zurich (140.475).

"The girls are very self-motivated which we have that coming into every meet," Carmel coach Sarah Mikrut Doyle said. "Coming into this meet we wanted to clean things up. We're still having some troubles on beam. Floor is where we want it to be. We just have to do what we're already doing.

The Corsairs' Lyndsey Basara landed the top vault (9.6). She also placed fourth on bars, tied with Kristin Fisch of Lake Forest (9.2), and fourth on floor (9.2). Clare Keane chalked up first on the bars (9.6) while her teammate Izzy Kropiwiec was second (9.55). Audrey Legarreta placed third on the beam (9.25).

Lauren Tenbrunsel of Barrington had the top score on the floor (9.35). She also placed third in the all-around (36.75) and tied for fifth with Lake Forest's Fisch on vault (9.4).

"I was very confident going into it, usually I'm pretty nervous," said Tenbrunsel of her outstanding floor routine. "I went into it with a good mindset and followed through it."

The Fillies also had Jade Moranetz tie with Deerfield's Joie Platt for fourth on the beam (9.15).

"We still have some room for improvement, but they performed well and I'm happy with it," Barrington coach Jason Loeffler said. "It was kind of a non-pressure meet. It was good to have some falls and wobbles and still score well."

Emily Weinstein of Stevenson was back to competing missing three meets. She had a strong meet, taking second in the all-around with 36.8. She placed third on bars (9.25) and fourth on vault (9.45).

"Taking second means a lot, because hard work pays off," Weinstein said. "I am healthy finally as of Thursday. It was just a tailbone problem, not much of an injury. I don't think it was really serious."

Mundelein's Emma Hallin finished fifth in the all around (36.65), but she finished second on beam (9.5).
