Girls volleyball: Fremd takes second at Lake Park

Fremd's girls volleyball team finished the regular season on Saturday with a second-place finish at the Lake Park Invite.

Joliet West won the title with a 25-23, 21-25, 15-8 triumph in the championship match over the Vikings, who previously defeated Bartlett, Prospect, Warren and Glenbard North to go 4-1.

Leading the Mid-Suburban West co-champs (28-7) on attack were Heidi Sayre (104-118, 45 kills), Breslen Reid (80-91, 31 kills) and Peyton Hooker (81-91, 23 kills).

They took their cues from setters Lydia Vander Ark (152-157, 63 assists) and Rian Baker (189-192, 56 assists).

Baker led the Vikes with 9 aces while Maddie Aichinger collected 56 digs.

Mid-Suburban East co champion Hersey (26-9) finished fourth in the invite, notching two-set wins over Hoffman Estates, Dundee -Crown and Lake Park in pool play before falling to Joliet West and Warren.

"We finished up our regular season losing a few tough matches but we're excited about starting the playoffs," said Hersey coach Nancy Lill. "This tournament was great for gaining more experience heading into the state tourney."

Top attackers for the Huskies were Kati Kaburov (58 kills, 33 digs, 6 aces, 1 block), Alessia Olhava (24 kills, 2 blocks, 38 digs), Janine Boyan (18 kills, 8 blocks), Juliette van den Herik (15 kills, 10 blocks) and Kaiya Eshoo (Kaiya Eshoo (14 kills, 120 assists, 4 blocks, 34 digs).

Other key performers for Hersey were Kate Lubbe (5 kills, 4 blocks, 9 digs), Katie Moreno (4 aces, 12 digs), Maddie Mullin (42 digs, 1 ace) and Karolina Wojdacz (15 digs, 2 aces).

Prospect (18-18) went 1-4 in the tourney. The Knights were led on attack by Emma Cogan (26 kills), Grace Cacini (25), Sloane Petlak (15), Annie Wiley (14) and Elizabeth Abraham (12) as junior setter Sarah Skaggs handed out 86 assists.

Petlak led with 7 blocks and Mia Farraday had a team-best 41 digs followed by Skaggs (30). Cogan served a team-high 9 aces.
