Boys soccer: Rodriguez's late goal lifts Warren

Sebastian Rodriguez scored in the 76th minute, lifting Warren's boys soccer team to a 2-1 win over Barrington in semifinal action of the Class 3A Mundelein regional on Tuesday night.

Luke Schoenbrunn opened the scoring for No. 11 Warren (7-6-5), before No. 6 Barrington pulled even before halftime. Chris Uribe made 6 saves in net for the Blue Devils, who will play No. 3 Mundelein in Saturday's 10 a.m. final.

"Two quality teams going at it," Warren coach Jason Ahonen said. "I thought we did a fantastic job offensively, keeping our shape and making them work for all their opportunities. I was very proud of the boys with their effort not only today but leading up to the game and throughout the season. The boys have improved every day and we are fortunate to play on Saturday against very talented Mundelein team."

Mundelein 5, Deerfield 0: At Mundelein, the host and No. 3 seed earned the shutout in its regional semifinal.

Mundelein will take on No. 11 Warren at 10 a.m. Saturday for the Class 3A regional championship.

Vernon Hills 2, Prairie Ridge 1: At Vernon Hills, the host Cougars got goals from Zidane Chairez and Stephen Auw in their Class 2A regional semifinal.

No. 3 Vernon Hills (8-8-4) will play No. 2 Lakes in Friday's 7 p.m. final.

"I thought we started the game very sharp and scored a great first goal," Cougars coach Mike McCaulou said. "We created a few more great chances in the first half, but didn't capitalize on those. Give credit to PR, as they showed a ton of grit and heart to equalize and then put pressure on us. I thought our game-winner was worked well with a great whipped in ball by Tyler Gonzalez and Stephen Auw making an excellent run across the defender and placing the ball in the back of the net. We are excited to get the opportunity to play Lakes for the regional championship on Friday."

Lakes 2, North Chicago 0: At Vernon Hills, the second-seeded Eagles picked up the shutout against the No. 7 seed in their Class 2A state tournament opener to advance to Friday's 7 p.m. regional final.

Max Keenan had a goal and an assist for Lakes (10-5-4). Eliam Meir scored as well for the Eagles. Patrick McMahon made 7 saves for his eighth shutout of the season.

"The game turned out to be very competitive," Lakes coach Kevin Kullby said. "Give North Chicago credit. They played well and made the game very difficult for us. We were fortunate to get a couple of goals, but in the end we defended well and created a good number of chances in the second half to score some more goals."

Libertyville 7, Palatine 1: At Libertyville, the top-seeded and undefeated Wildcats cruised against the No. 17 seed to earn a berth in their own Class 3A regional semifinal.

Libertyville will next play the winner of Wednesday's match between No. 7 Stevenson and No. 9 Zion-Benton.
