Girls volleyball: Grayslake North grinds out win over Grant

Alyssa Gerzel had 11 kills, Lindsey Deip dished out 15 assists, and Grayslake North's girls volleyball team defeated host Grant 25-13, 25-23 in a Northern Lake County Conference matchup Thursday night.

Jessica Pozezinski's serving led the Knights in the opening set. Grant held a 23-22 advantage in the second set, but Pozezinski slammed a kill down the line to tie it up.

Abby Cunningham added 7 assists for Grayslake North (12-15, 4-1). Emmy Bongiovanni had 5 kills. Lexi Baker and Pozezinski had 10 and 9 digs, respectively.

Grant's Anelise Johnson had 4 kills and 3 blocks. Jazzlyn Linbo added 3 kills and 2 blocks for the Bulldogs, and Laurice Lavajo had 2 service aces.

Grayslake Central d. Round Lake: Cassidy Beshel had 7 kills, 4 blocks and 1 ace to lead the visiting Rams to a 25-17, 25-13 win in Northern Lake County action.

Grayslake Central (17-10, 5-1) also received 4 kills apiece from Emma Henne and Taylor Hindman, while Elisa Koshy notched 20 assists, 2 aces and 5 digs. The Rams' other contributors included Kate Bullman (3 kills, 1 block) Taylor Ford (10 digs), Abby Marassa (8 digs) and Maya Schnitzler (5 digs).

"Proud of how we played against a very scrappy Round Lake team," Grayslake Central coach Jason Janczak said. "Our defense did a solid job keeping balls alive, and our front row saw the openings on the court really well tonight."

Wauconda d. North Chicago: Audrey Deaver and Emma Miller each had 4 kills, and the host Bulldogs captured a 25-5, 25-12 decision in Northern Lake County action.

Lexie Myers contributed 3 kills for Wauconda (7-18, 2-3). Grace Poduch and Tara Bierdz each served 3 aces, and Savannah Johnson recorded 13 assists and 2 aces.

Carmel d. Waukegan: Annie Bart had 7 kills, and the visiting Corsairs won 25-7, 25-19 in nonconference action,

Other contributors for Carmel (14-13) included Riley Clark, Amber Dorn, Mya Mainzer and Eileen Tarcha with 3 kills each. Kaitlyn Donton led the team in assists with 14, while Patti Needham and Molly Halverson each added three more. Milana Moisio had a team-high 8 digs, Bart added six and Jolina Moisio had five. Anna Clesceri served 2 aces, Bart had two too, and Dorn and Tarcha each added one.

"With the playoffs just a couple weeks away it is time to elevate our execution in every aspect of the game," Carmel coach David Pazely said. "This young team has come a long way in many ways this season, and we look to take our No. 1 seed in our subsectional as deep into the playoffs as we can."
