Chicago White Sox manager Renteria scheduled for more testing; Abreu has outpatient surgery

After news broke during Sunday's game against the Kansas City Royals that prized pitching prospect Michael Kopech was going to make his major-league debut Tuesday night, White Sox manager Rick Renteria was excited.

He also was relieved.

For weeks - months actually - Renteria was constantly asked when Kopech was coming up from Class AAA Charlotte and joining the Sox's starting rotation.

When the answer finally came, Renteria was happier than most and looking forward to seeing the 22-year-old righty pitch against Minnesota at Guaranteed Rate Field.

Due to a medical issue, Renteria is going to have to wait.

Before Monday night's makeup game against the Twins at Target Field, Renteria became lightheaded and was hospitalized at Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis for precautionary reasons.

According to the Sox, the 55-year-old Renteria was released from the hospital Tuesday afternoon after undergoing a battery of tests.

Renteria spent the night in Minneapolis and was scheduled to fly back to Chicago on Wednesday, where he will undergo further testing at Rush University Medical Center under the supervision of Dr. Scott Palmer.

Bench coach Joe McEwing is replacing Renteria.

"Our prayers are with him," shortstop Tim Anderson said. "I don't know what actually (is wrong) with him, but prayers with him. Hopefully he can get back with us soon."

McEwing had frequent contact with Renteria on Tuesday.

"Our thoughts are with Ricky," McEwing said. "He's an amazing person, an amazing leader. I talked to him five or six times today, just to more or less see how he's doing as a person. That's what means the most.

"He sounds great. He's a very tough individual. Just to hear him laughing, kind of see what is going on around here, don't worry about it. We've got this. Don't worry about it. Worry about yourself and getting healthy. That's where our mindset is."

Abreu surgery:

Jose Abreu had successful outpatient surgery Tuesday in the lower abdomen/groin area at Rush, and the White Sox announced the first baseman will be able to return to baseball activities in two weeks.

Abreu leads the Sox with a .272 batting average, 22 home runs and 78 RBI.

Roster moves:

To clear a roster spot for Michael Kopech, the White Sox optioned Tyler Danish to Class AAA Charlotte. In 7 relief appearances, Danish was 1-0 with a 7.11 ERA.

The Sox also placed outfielder Leury Garcia on the disabled list with a strained left hamstring. Ryan LaMarre was recalled from Charlotte to take his roster spot.
