Softball: Hersey rallies past Meadows 5-4

Hersey remained a half-game behind Prospect in the Mid-Suburban East softball standings by scoring the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning to edge visiting Rolling Meadows 5-4 on Thursday.

The Huskies (10-3, 5-2) tied the game at 4-4 with a run in the bottom of the sixth and then won it in the seventh when senior Hannah Gaff scored from third base on Asia Luboyeski's ground ball.

Graff led the Huskies' offense by going 3-for-4 while Jodi Hermann was 2-for-3. Graff and Makayla Tsagalis each doubled for the Huskies, who host Conant (9-5, 5-2) today.

Sarah Bailitz (7-1), who struck out two, earned the win over Elise Kowalski (6-3).

Kendra Herring (2-for-3) and Sara Benner each had a double for Meadows (6-10, 3-5).

Palatine 19, Hoffman Estates 0 (5 inn.): Palatine exploded for 14 runs in the bottom of the fourth inning as the Pirates raised their record to 14-2 and 6-1 in the Mid-Suburban West, one game behind Barrington (7-0).

Sophomore Rhiann Dick (5-2) struck out five while tossing 2-hitter.

Leading the Pirates' offense were Mandy Logan (2-for-2, double, 2 RBI), Maddie Craver (3-for-5, 2 double, 2 RBI, stolen bases) and Chase Friel (2-for-2, 2 RBI).

Highlighting the big 14-run inning were a triple from Emily Parrott, doubles from Maddie Craver, Grace Huff and Mandy Logan and singles from Chase Friel (2), Amanda Stanczuk, Logan and Parrott.

"I just wanted to stay in and hit the ball to get on base so we could score," Friel said. "And so that we could keep the momentum going."

"I was just thinking about helping the team to score runs after my teammates had loaded the bases," Craver said about her big double in the fourth inning.

Kaitlyn Reed also had a double for Palatine in the second inning.

"My goal was to get up there and make solid contact to move the runners," Reed said. "I was proud of how the team played today."

The Pirates head to Mt. Prospect today to face Prospect (13-4) in a Mid-Suburban League crossover.

Prospect 16, Buffalo Grove 6 (5 inn): Prospect senior shortstop Lauren Caldrone went 3-for-4 and broke the career school record for doubles with 28. Also doubling for host Knights (13-4, 6-2) were Alex Kanter (2-for-4), Alyssa Cacini (2-for-4), Jackie Orel (2-for-4) and Colleen Palczynski (2-for-4), who also belted her 20th career homer.

Winning pitcher Claire Doherty (7-2) worked three innings with 1 hit, 8 strikeouts and no walks for the Knights who scored 9 runs in the second inning and did not commit an error for the second straight day.

Samantha Hansen and Bailey Williams each tripled for Buffalo Grove (2-11, 0-7).

Maine West 9, Highland Park 0: Sophomore Amanda Byrne (2-for-3, 4 RBI) and senior Katelyn Aragon belted home runs for visiting Maine West (10-7, 5-1) in the CSL North game. Junior Olivia Feldkamp went 2-for-2 for West while Brianna Migaczewski also had a double.

Sophomore Jessica Steingard went the first five innings for the win, allowing 5 hits with 7 strikeouts. Migaczewski struck out three and gave up 1 hit in the final two innings.

Warren 10, Fremd 5: Jess Mazur went 3-for-4 with 3 runs for Fremd (10-5) in the nonconference game in Palatine.

Lexi D'Ambrosio was the Vikes' other multiple hitter. The senior catcher went 2-for-3 with a double.

Hannah Ban (double), Grace Stevens, Anna Freveletti and Gianna Arnieri each had a hit for Fremd.

Sandburg 5, Barrington 2: Samantha Murphy (2-for-2, double, 2 RB) and Jenna Patino (2-for-4) led the offense for host Barrington (17-2). Kendall Peterson and Leyden Atlas scored the runs for the Fillies in the nonconference game.

Junior Tori Meyer (7-2) worked the first 4⅔ innings and Caroline Hoppe went the final 2⅓ innings, facing just 7 batters with 2 strikeouts and 1 hit.

Glenbard West 5, Elk Grove 4: Glenbard West rallied from a 4-0 deficit with 5 runs in the top of the third inning in the nonconference game in Glen Ellyn. Junior Brook Baldassarre went all seven innings for the Grenadiers (7-8), whose multiple hitters were Katia Pendowski (2-for-4, double) and Alex Masnica (2-for-5).
