Girls volleyball: Fremd, Schaumburg tie for MSL West title

Led by senior Morgan Sterrett's 11 kills and 6 from classmate Dana Kiszkowski, Schaumburg posted a 25-21, 6-25, 25-23 triumph over visiting Barrington on Thursday night to take a share of the Mid-Suburban West girls volleyball championship.

The Saxons, under first-year coach Tim Murphy, finished at 8-2 to tie defending champion Fremd (16-7, 8-2).

It is the Saxons' first division crown since 2014.

Fremd earned the berth in next Thursday's MSL champinship game due to the head-to-head tiebreaker with the Saxons, which was point differential in their two matches.

Fremd will face Hersey on Thursday.

Michelle Candotti (18 assists, 2 blocks, 1 ace) set the Saxons' offense while senior Maia Gibbs also chipped in 3 blocks and 2 kills. Kiszkowski also served 2 aces and had a block while Sterett served 3 aces.

Barrington (18-11, 6-4) was led Andi Capel (13 kills, 4 aces, 11 digs), Bailey Madrzyk (8 kills, 2 ace), Suzana Andrade de Oliveira ( 7 digs, 2 aces), Tara Kozak (31 assists), Paige Ramel ( 3 kills, 6 blocks), Kate Shechtman (6 kills, 3 blocks) and Peyton Tilly (8 kills, 1 aces, 4 digs).

Fremd d. Conant: Fremd wrapped up its sixth MSL divisional championship season (four under coach Curt Pinley) with a 25-18, 25-15 triumph on its senior night.

Heidi Sayre (8 kills), Jess Rizzo (6 kills) and Jess Mazur (6 kills) led the attack for the MSL West co-champs while Sarah Straup handed out 21 assists.

Yuri Hara (6 kills 11 digs), Chikere Odoucha (4 kills) and Kristina Loznjakovic (10 assists) led the Cougars (6-17, 2-8)

Hersey d. Elk Grove: Host Hersey (19-5) celebrated its senior night by wrapping up a 10-0 run through the MSL East and 15th straight crown with a 25-22, 25-22 win.

Kati Kaburov (7 kills), Amy Morgan (7 kills), Janine Boyan (5 kills) and Juliette Vandenherik (5 kills) led the Huskies' attack set by Emma Strozewski (15 assists) and Alessia Olhava (11 assists).

Molly Twohig came up with 12 digs while Vandenherik posted 4 blocks.

Rachel Kandefer led Elk Grove (3-25, 0-10) with 7 kills while Megan Murray had 13 digs and 2 aces.

Buffalo Grove d. Wheeling: The visiting Bison (14-11, 6-4) took second place in the MSL East with a 25-15, 25-21 triumph led by Nicole Langer and Claire Ferriss, who had 7 kills apiece.

Lauren Horvath and Mary Nowlan each had 4 kills while Magie Steckert handed out 19 assists.

Jessica Jankowski handed out 11 assists for Wheeling (15-13, 4-6) while Rugile Jaciunas led the team with 4 blocks. Nicole Nguyen paced the Wildcats with 5 kills and 15 digs.

Palatine d. Hoffman Estates: Palatine (21-8) won its ninth straight match to finish the MSL West with 6-4 record.

Maine West defeated Deerfield: The Warriors posted a 25-21, 25-18 to improve to 17-11 and 6-2 in CSL North.
