Woman charged with murder in Oakbrook Terrace hotel shooting

A Naperville woman has been charged with murder in connection with a shooting Saturday night inside an Oakbrook Terrace hotel.

One count of first-degree murder was filed Monday morning against Latrice T. Phillips, 51, of the 1400 block of Normantown Road, according to DuPage County court records.

She is charged with killing 33-year-old Calvin Truitt, whose address was not immediately known. Phillips is being detained pretrial in the county jail.

Police were called to the shooting at about 8:15 p.m. Saturday in the Hilton Suites, 10 Drury Lane.

According to a petition for detention filed by a DuPage assistant state's attorney, someone in the Hilton told police there was "trouble in the hotel pool area," the document states.

Prosecutors alleged that Phillips got into a verbal altercation with a person in a group of people whom she knew, including Truitt, at the hotel pool. Truitt and his group got in an elevator to leave the area.

Phillips followed the group into the elevator and argued with them, according to an account given to police.

When the elevator doors opened on the seventh floor, a fight ensued, at which time Phillips pulled out a handgun and fired three times, striking Truitt, prosecutors said.

Two people told police they saw Phillips "raise" a gun, the petition states. One of them didn't see what happened next, and the other also did not see the shooting, but both reported hearing gunshots.

Surveillance video only shows Phillips getting into the elevator with the group that included Truitt. But a cellphone recording taken from a lower floor indicates three shots were fired, according to the petition.

After the shooting, prosecutors said, Phillips returned to her hotel room. She was taken into custody a short time later without incident. When processing the hotel room, authorities recovered a Taurus 9 mm handgun in a holster from Phillips' waistband, prosecutors said.

She was treated and released from the hospital for an injured finger, the petition states.

Police found Truitt with two gunshot wounds. Truitt was taken to an area hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Police said Sunday they had taken a person of interest into custody.

"Within minutes the officers had administered first aid to the victim, secured a ten-story building to ensure the safety of others, and then apprehended the suspect," Oakbrook Terrace Police Chief Casey Calvello said in a statement.

Phillips is next due in court for her arraignment on Jan. 4.
