Northbrook notes: Flamingo Fridays, Chamber golf outing, YMCA gallery, science fair winners

Flamingo Fridays kick off

A kickoff to the Northbrook Community Commission's popular "Flamingo Fridays" will be held Friday behind village hall, 1225 Cedar Lane.

Flamingo Fridays are a way to meet neighbors and make friends. On Fridays or other weekend evenings from Memorial Day to Labor Day people offer an outdoor get-together at their house. Visitors bring their own drinks and a snack.

Hosts place a pink plastic flamingo in their yard a few days beforehand to signal they're hosting the gathering. The next volunteer host inherits the flamingo, posts it in their yard, and so on.

The mini-parties last an hour or two or as long as the host likes. These gatherings also can double as block parties.

The Flamingo Fridays kicks off from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday. There will be outdoor games, food, giveaways, music and information from other Northbrook civic groups.

As an added bonus, Northbrook village Trustee Johannah Hebl will be wearing a flamingo costume at the kickoff.

Art and crafts worthy of mom

North Suburban YMCA's Community Gallery in Northbrook offers exhibitions by different local artists each month.

In reflection of the month of Mother's Day, crafts and artwork by Kim Edgar will be featured throughout May at the gallery, 2705 Techny Road.

A single mother, Edgar's passion for crafting has gone from hobby to profession. She makes items for birthday parties, baby showers, and other celebrations, decorates clothing and dishware. She'll personalize tumblers, coasters, keychains and take on specific requests.

Exhibits at the gallery are free and open to the public. For information on the YMCA's art exhibits, call Cathie Winnie at (847) 272- 7250.
