Police: West Chicago man, 19, left ID with officer before fleeing traffic stop

A West Chicago man is facing felony charges after officials said he drove away early from a traffic stop Friday morning, leaving his driver's license with the officer who pulled him over.

Salvador Bautista, 19, of the 600 block of E. Grand Lake Boulevard, is charged with two counts of aggravated fleeing and eluding a police officer. Bautista put up $5,000 in cash, 10% of the $50,000 arrest warrant that a judge had issued, in order to leave jail while the case is pending.

Bautista was pulled over by a West Chicago police officer at around 10:16 a.m. Friday near Ingalton Avenue and National Street, according to a release issued by the DuPage County State's Attorney's Office Monday afternoon.

Before the officer had finished the traffic stop but after Bautista had handed over his driver's license, officials said Bautista drove away from the officer, driving as fast as 82 mph and ignoring two stop signs along the way.

The police pursuit was called off due to safety concerns, and a warrant was issued for Bautista's arrest. Bautista turned himself in to police Friday evening.

DuPage County State's Attorney Robert Berlin said his office recently has seen an increase in drivers fleeing from police.

"Anyone who attempts to flee from police will be caught and will only find themselves facing more serious charges," Berlin said. "I urge everyone, if you hear sirens and see flashing lights behind you, pull over and cooperate with the police."
