Morrison leading predecessor Gorman among contested Cook County Board primaries

Republican 17th District Cook County Commissioner Sean M. Morrison of Palos Park appeared to be holding off a primary challenge from his predecessor Elizabeth "Liz" Doody Gorman of Orland Park late Tuesday.

The makeup of general election contests in three Cook County Board districts with suburban territory largely took shape as unofficial primary results moved toward completion.

With 97% of precincts counted in the 17th District GOP primary, Morrison had 11,058 votes, or 57.2% of the total to Gorman's 42.8%.

With the same percentage of precincts, Daniel T. Calandriello of Orland Park had 10,467 votes or 53.9% of the total to the 46.1% of Lou Gale of La Grange in the Democratic primary for the 17th District.

In even more crowded contests, Democrat Maggie Trevor of Chicago and Republican Matt Podgorski of Chicago emerged as the likely opponents in the Nov. 8 general election for the county board's 9th District seat.

With 98% of precincts counted, Trevor had 8,166 votes, or 38.1%, while Sam Kukadia had 6,524 votes, or 30.4%, while Heather Anne Boyle got 4,772 votes and Frank L. McPartlin tallied 1,999.

Podgorski had 12,275 votes, or 73% of the total, to Mark Hosty's 2,314 votes and Frank L. Coconate's 2,208.

In the Republican primary for the 15th District, Chuck Cerniglia of Hoffman Estates emerged as the likely challenger to Democratic incumbent Kevin B. Morrison of Mount Prospect in November.

With 97% of precincts counted, Cerniglia had 7,030 votes or 70.6% of the total to the 29.4% won by Kevin A. Ake of Elk Grove Village.

There were no contested primaries in the 14th District. Democratic incumbent Scott R. Britton of Glenview will face a challenge from Republican Benton Howser of Wilmette in the fall.
