Wheaton native plant sale set for April 23

Wheaton's native plant sale will offer green thumbs a wide selection for their gardens.

A roughly 30-page list of trees, shrubs, prairie grasses, ferns, woody vines and flowering plants will be available at the sale from 8:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. Saturday, April 23, in the city's public works storage yard, 820 W. Liberty Drive.

The city, its environmental improvement commission and the Wheaton Park District partner on the event to encourage residents to plant native species that are adapted to the area's climate and soils.

Native species can attract butterflies and birds and resist drought while providing a low-maintenance landscape, organizers say.

The list of plants that will be sold is posted on the Wheaton Park District's website. Cash will not be accepted; payment must be made by check or credit card.
