Shaving it off for a cause: Hawthorn Mall St. Baldrick's event benefits childhood cancer research

Hannah Lampinen's light brown hair, subtly highlighted with green, extended to her middle ear on the sides and to her collar in the back when she sat down in the stylist's chair during the St. Baldrick's event at Hawthorn Mall in Vernon Hills Saturday.

In exactly three minutes, it was shaved away with clippers.

Lampinen, of Oak Creek, Wisconsin, said it was the fourth time she has participated in the event. She helped raise $3,000 of the event organizers' goal of $10,000 and was presented with a medal for her efforts.

"It's such a great cause, and childhood cancer changes so many people's lives, when so many people are getting diagnosed, and so they deserve a better chance," Lampinen said.

Mall employees, members of the Countryside Fire Protection District and the Vernon Hills Police Department, as well as members of the public, were among the 15 people who signed up to have their heads shaved.
