State police: Lakemoor man struck trooper's vehicle on I-290

Illinois State Police is investigating five crashes involving troopers' squad cars across the state during Thursday's snowstorm.

In DuPage County, a trooper was assisting a motorist on westbound Interstate 290 at Thorndale Avenue about 8:50 p.m. when his squad car, which was parked on the right shoulder and had its lights activated, was struck by a blue 2015 Chevrolet SUV driven by a Lakemoor man, according to a news release.

Both Harold E. Murphy III, 59, and the state trooper sustained minor injuries and were taken a hospital.

State police said Murphy was cited for failure to yield to an emergency vehicle in violation of the Move Over Law, which is also called "Scott's Law."

"Inclement weather presents a greater risk to everyone, especially our troopers working day and night to assist motorists on the road," said state police Director Brendan F. Kelly. "We need you, the motoring public, to help them out by slowing down and moving over when approaching first responders on the roadway."

Thursday's snowstorm created a flurry of work for the state police.

The agency reported investigating 303 crashes and responding to more than 2,000 calls for service.
